Finding What You’re Looking For?

I usually shop for groceries at the same store, even though there are a couple of others in my town I like as well or better.  This is the one that’s the most convenient for short, quick trips when I just need a handful of items.  That means that instead of preparing a list and methodically going through the store, I shop in more of a hit and miss way, trying to remember which aisles have the products I am looking for.  It shouldn’t be too hard, right, since I go there a lot?

But inevitably, I get to the checkout feeling like I missed something.  Not too long ago I was on one of these hit or miss trips.  Because this store is always striving to give good customer service, the clerk asks me, “Find everything you were looking for today?”

I thought about it for a moment.  I was pretty sure I had everything I needed for dinner that night, plus the two or three other things I came for.  But I had a niggling doubt that, just maybe, I didn’t.  Oh well, I thought.  If I missed something, it must not be too critical.  I’ll just get it next time.

I replied, “You find more when you know what you’re looking for.”  I smiled.  She smiled.  We chatted a bit as she finished, and I headed home.

But I started to think about our spontaneous conversation.  I hadn’t meant to, but I’d stumbled onto a profound truth that applies to a whole lot more than leaving the grocery store confident you have everything for that night’s dinner!

Preparation, clarity of purpose, having a plan:  these are the things that lead to easily and quickly finding everything you need when you want to stock your pantry at your local grocery store.  Or even more importantly, want to stock up at the local warehouse store!  You can easily spend a lot more time and money there than you intended if you don’t decide what you’re looking for ahead of time.

It’s the same in life.  Wandering around, randomly choosing a path hoping what you are looking for will be there, leads to the feeling at the end that you might have missed something along the way.  How much better it is to have the confidence, sense of readiness and direction that comes from laying the foundation of preparation, really getting clarity about your purpose and intention, and having a plan or map that will get you exactly to where you want to go.

Remember, you find more when you know what you’re looking for.  Do you know?  If not, take some time today to connect with your Inner Wisdom and decide where you need to make the necessary changes so you can be prepared, be clear and be confident!
